PHOENIX — Julie Gunnigle released the following statement regarding new, national-level endorsements of her campaign:
“I am humbled and grateful to have received endorsements from award-winning actor and musician John Legend and EMILY’s List.
In addition to being one of the greatest artists of our generation, John Legend has been a tireless advocate for criminal justice reform nationwide. He continues to inspire millions of Americans through his music and activism. I am thrilled to have his support in this critical election to bring real, lasting criminal justice reform to Maricopa County.
As the Democratic nominee for Maricopa County Attorney, I am honored to have earned the endorsement of EMILY’s List. I am committed to bringing change to our community and protecting the reproductive rights of women in Arizona.”
John Legend is an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award winning musician and performer. He is an award-winning civil rights activist who released this statement: “I support Julie Gunnigle in her race for [County] Attorney of Maricopa County. Her commitment to implementing diversion programs, stopping low-level marijuana prosecutions, and bringing about evidence-based drug reforms would lead people to treatment rather than prison.”
EMILY’s List is a national organization devoted to electing pro-choice Democratic women. “As a former Professor of Law, a current solo practitioner, a mother of three and former prosecutor, Julie is running to make her community safer, fairer, and more equitable. Julie’s vision includes cracking down on public corruption, ending cash bail, and putting an end to discriminatory sentencing that disproportionately affects communities of color,” said Sarah Curmi, interim vice president of state and local campaigns at EMILY’s List. “EMILY’s List is proud to endorse Julie, and we are excited to see her become the first woman elected to serve as Maricopa County Attorney.”
The above endorsers join an ever growing list of supporters that includes former Democratic primary candidates Ryan Tait, Bob McWhirter, Tamika Wooten, the Maricopa County Democratic Party, and other unions and organizations such as the American Federation of Teachers, AFSCME, National Organization for Women Arizona, Equality Arizona, and Democracy for All.
Julie Gunnigle is the Democratic nominee for Maricopa County Attorney. As a former prosecutor and nonprofit executive she understands the complexity of our criminal justice system. She is running to transform the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office into an institution that is tough, smart, and fair.
