PHOENIX – Julie Gunnigle, Democratic nominee for Maricopa County Attorney issued the following statement following Tuesday’s decisive primary results:

“Despite a global pandemic, Arizonans turned out in record numbers to cast their ballots and voice their support for change in our community. In a resounding fashion, voters embraced our campaign’s vision of reforming the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office into an institution that leads the nation in reform.

I first want to thank all the volunteers, the voters, and the organizations that have helped make this victory possible. We are one step closer to creating real criminal justice reform in Arizona that will make our community safer, stronger, more just, and save taxpayer dollars.

Secondly, I would like to thank my primary opponents for their hard work during this primary. We are building a strong coalition to win in November and I look forward to working with them in the general election.

Last but most importantly, I would like to thank the folks and organizations that believed in our campaign early on during the primary. Thank you to House Minority Leader Charlene Fernandez, Senator Sean Bowie, Representative Jenn Jermaine, and Representative Alma Hernadez. Thank you to Arizona List, Equality Arizona, International Painters and Trades, Southwest Carpenters, American Federation of Teachers, AFSCME, Democracy for America, Vote Mama, Arizona NOW, Run for Something and so many community leaders and organizations.

I look forward to working hard to become the first elected female Maricopa County Attorney in November. Our campaign is focused on winning this race to bring long-overdue changes to our criminal justice system in Arizona that include ending the legacy of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and SB 1070 as well as bringing much-needed transparency to this office.”
